How to Set Up a Personal AI Assistant in 5 Minutes

Published February 16, 2026

You've probably seen the videos. AI assistants that can research topics, draft messages, remember conversations, and help with daily tasks. Impressive stuff. But then you look into setting one up and it's... complicated. API keys, server configurations, command line interfaces.

It doesn't have to be that way. Here's how to get your own AI assistant running in about five minutes, with zero technical knowledge required.

What You're Getting

Before the how, let's cover the what. By the end of this guide, you'll have:

  • An AI assistant that works directly in WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, and Telegram
  • Local processing — your conversations stay on your device, not some company's servers
  • 24/7 availability — the assistant runs whenever your computer is on
  • Unified context — the AI remembers conversations across all your messaging apps

Step 1: Download EasyClaw

Head to easyclaw.app/download and grab the installer for your system. It's available for macOS and Windows.

The download is about 200MB. It includes everything you need — the AI model, the messaging integrations, all of it. No separate downloads or dependencies.

Step 2: Install and Open

On Mac, drag EasyClaw to your Applications folder. On Windows, run the installer and follow the prompts. Standard stuff.

When you first open the app, it'll take a minute to initialize the AI model. This is a one-time thing — subsequent launches are instant.

Step 3: Connect Your Messaging Apps

EasyClaw shows you a simple setup screen with each supported platform. For most apps, the connection process is:

  • WhatsApp: Scan a QR code with your phone (same as WhatsApp Web)
  • iMessage: Already connected if you're on a Mac with Messages set up
  • Signal: Link as a secondary device
  • Telegram: Log in with your phone number

You don't need to connect all of them. Start with the apps you use most. You can add others later.

Step 4: Start a Conversation

That's it. You're done.

To talk to your AI assistant, just message the dedicated AI contact that appears in each connected app. Or you can forward any message to it and ask for help. The AI sees your message and responds right there in the chat.

Try something simple to start: "What's a good recipe for pasta?" or "Summarize the news today" or "Help me draft a message to my boss about taking Friday off."

What You Can Do Now

With your AI assistant running, here are some things to try:

  • Ask questions about anything — it's like having a knowledgeable friend always available
  • Draft messages by describing what you want to say and letting the AI compose it
  • Summarize long threads by forwarding them to your AI with "what's the summary?"
  • Translate messages to and from other languages
  • Plan events by describing what you're trying to organize

Privacy Notes

A few things worth knowing about how your data is handled:

The AI runs entirely on your device. Your messages don't leave your computer. EasyClaw doesn't have servers that process your conversations. When you ask the AI something, it's computed locally and never transmitted anywhere.

This is why we built on OpenClaw, an open-source framework. The code is public. Anyone can verify these claims. Privacy isn't a policy — it's how the software actually works.

Troubleshooting

Most issues come down to a few things:

  • Slow responses: The first few responses take longer as the model warms up. It gets faster.
  • Connection dropped: Messaging app connections can expire. Just reconnect from the settings.
  • High memory usage: The AI model uses RAM. If your computer has less than 8GB, you might see slowdowns.

For anything else, the docs have more detailed guidance.

Five Minutes Well Spent

AI assistants aren't just for tech enthusiasts anymore. The barriers to entry keep dropping. Today, getting one running is as simple as downloading an app.

The five minutes you spent setting this up will save hours over the coming months. Having an AI available in your messages — instantly, privately, without context switching — changes how you work and communicate.

Welcome to having an AI assistant that actually fits into your life.
